Sac Bee Editorial: Thriving Schools for Thriving City

Next mayor must chart a course of leadership on improved schools.

As voters appraise the candidates for mayor, Heather Fargo and Kevin Johnson, they should ask the candidates to outline their views on the mayor’s proper role in improving public schools. And they should expect answers to some specifics, too. Such as:

• What do you see as strengths in Sacramento’s public schools?

• What do you see as weaknesses?

• Name three things that you’d do to tackle issues facing the city’s public schools.

Sac PD says Sacramento High case is closed

Sacramento Police Chief Rick Braziel said Wednesday his department will not reopen its investigation into a Sacramento Charter High School teacher’s report last year that a 17-year-old student told him she was inappropriately touched by Kevin Johnson.

Braziel spoke by phone “for about an hour” Wednesday morning with representatives of the District Attorney Jan Scully’s office.

Mayor Heather Fargo requested the investigation last week
. A Fargo spokesperson said that the mayor appreciated the chief following through on the matter, and respects his decision.
