No prisoners redux

The message we send to our kids every day couldn’t be clearer – if you want to work hard towards your future and become a contributor to our society, we’ll throw you less than $5,000 a year for your education. If instead you want to hurt yourself and society and go to prison, we’ll spend $50,000 a year on you. And by the way, the prison system is banking on which choice you make, because it makes its future plans based on the number of kids in third grade each year.

  1. Arizona used to plan jail space by the number of third graders who were not reading at grade level.
