Board Meeting Highlights of 1/15/09

Closed session:

• The Board met for two hours. No action was reported out. A student expulsion was voted on as a consent item at the end of the open meeting.

Communication:

• Student member Lopez shared a written report on student advisory council work at the community, after school and site leadership levels.

• The Strategic Plan update is on the SCUSD website as a means to conserve costs.

• A committee will soon begin the development of desired qualifications for a superintendent search consultant. This group of 7 will be composed of the executive committee and the Board President’s selection of an additional 4 members nominated by the community. These selections will be approved by the Board.

Public comment:

• Name the schools at risk.

• No involuntary school closings

• Provide parent training workshops.

• Clarify open enrollment.

• Address inequity of Crocker Kindergarten enrollment.

• Keep Washington School open.

Public Hearing:

The Visionary Institute of Math and Science Charter Petition was shared. This is a proposed direct funded charter for 350 6, 7 & 8th graders to be located in South Sacramento near a cluster of PI 5 middle schools.

Initiatives:

• Local Educational Agency Plan on student achievement presented and will be brought back in February after consultation with parent committees.

• Policy Governance was discussed.

• The State and District Budget process was discussed.

Consent Agenda:

• Board minutes, emergency work, lower bus emissions program.

• Adjustment to bid threshold approved to $76,700.

• Board committee assignments approved
